I did another video of this project only black and white designs on the outside. I wanted students to see another use for it so I did this Christmas Version of the project. Some of my kids picked up on it pretty fast and started doing Christmas colors.

stripping varnish from wood and veneer furniture salvage project, using a proprietry paint stripper on varnish on a vintage hmv record cabinet in preparation for sanding staining and re varnishing.

for the varnishing video here

See my specialist range of hand trimmed paint brushes, great for cutting in tasks where precision painting is required i appreciate your support. for sale here goo.gl/Q99ZGq
Stripping varnish from veneered wood furniture
1950s vintage H.M.V record cabinet, a typical piece of this period this veneered cabinet has been stripped and stencilled by its previous owner so i remove the recent varnish to restore the cabinet to its former glory using supadec all purpose paint and varnish stripper a non caustic biodegradeable product
one generous coat of stripper was all that was required to remove the polyurethane coating
i used a medium grade wire wool to remove the final specks of varnish from the delicate veneer
always remember to neutralize the stripper before trying to re varnish or paint the wood, use water this should be enough. depending on which kind of paint stripper you have used!
when everything is dry use a very fine wire wool or sandpaper and make sure you follow the grain to prevent scratching the veneer
it also a good idea not to oversoak wood veneer as this could lift the very thin surface.
warning please make sure you cover your skin and protect your eyes when stripping as paint stripper is caustic.
to dipose of the waste you may produce spread the used stripper onto newspaper fold up and throw away in your trash.

Travel steamer trunk, box, antique salvage projectTravel box restored, see how i restore an antique and retain some character
military travel trunk restoration and renovation, bought back to life. by Stripping back many layers of paint and wallpaper we reveal a soldiers kit box, these sturdy trunks were typically made from recycled wooden ammunition or supplies containers.
Products used are paint stripper ESP surface preperation and water based floor varnish, the metal work was stripped and polished to create a functional striking talking point and centrepiece.
Knowing some of the real history and the provenance of the our box made this a special project for me which helped guide me to be a little more mindful of exactly how many changes were made and not to overdo some parts of the final renovation.
Renovating to me is a great therapy for my low boredom threshold and i always have to be busy, being creative is my hobby i hope you enjoy my films as much as i do making them, thank you for watching.

Travel steamer trunk, box, antique salvage project using colron refined wood dye and johnstones varnish to veneered or any type of wood furniture . Renovating or restorating projects sometimes require both stain and varnish to restore furniture to its former glory, the sanding and chemical stripping of wood often leaves the surface of furniture totally stripped of its colour and wood stain is the perfect way to add colour and life back to your chosen project, once you are happy with the colour it’s time to add a protective finish of your choice high gloss varnish, wax finish or a subtle satin will protect you furniture from stains and knocks.

video of hmv cabinet stripping

A start to finish restoration of a vintage 194Os hmv record cabinet, a nice piece of furniture is sanded and stained with colron wood dye and given a couple of coats of johnstones high gloss varnish .
preperation includes using ronseal two pack epoxy wood filler along with water based wood varnish, this example of vintage furniture originally produced to house a collection of shellac records which were played on a wind up gramaphone, this was a popular form of family entertainment during the wartime era.
From upcycle recycle to renovation and back to original condition
