In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick Regan, Maggie, and Kate visited Sioux Pottery for a once in a life time experience. There aren’t many places a family can go that are free, but Sioux Pottery in Rapid City, South Dakota is a place everyone can enjoy without spending a dime. Cheap Family Travel visited Sioux Pottery, and we got to watch the artists create Native Indian pottery from scratch. The Native Americans turned a block of clay into vases, plates, bowls, and ornaments. The native tribes of South Dakota Sioux, or the Lakota, demonstrate their Native American heritage and culture through their unique American Indian Arts. The kids got to put on an apron and create their own art out of sacred Black Hills red clay. Visitors don’t have to spend anything, but there is a gift shop that carries all kinds of the handmade pottery that was made at the site. Rapid City and Sioux Pottery are just up the road from Mount Rushmore National Monument and the Crazy Horse Memorial. Visitors to the Badlands of South Dakota are also only about a 20-minute drive from Sioux Pottery. Nick, Regan, Maggie and Kate all put Sioux Pottery as a must visit in South Dakota.

There’s a great collection of Franciscan Ware in the Mall, and this week’s program features examples in 5 different patterns: Desert Rose, Apple, Ivy, October, and Cafe Royal. We’ll discuss dating, the marks, values, rare pieces, and several of the designers. The company was Gladding, McBean, and it’s plant was in Glendale, CA for decades, before Wedgwood bought them out, and now a couple of patterns are still produced in China. It’s an iconic American brand, and I hope you find the story interesting.

Antique malls across America display hundreds of examples of every conceivable shape, size, age, condition, and decoration of American stoneware pottery, and among them are extremely valuable pieces that might go unnoticed, unless you know how value is determined in today’s marketplace. There have been several recent sales of cobalt decorated stoneware that have sold for more than $400,000! In the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall in Denver, Colorado I’ve found a couple of really special examples that we’ll discuss in this week’s show. One is a 5 gallon salt glaze crock by Cooper & Power of Maysville, Kentucky (one of their 1/2 gallon pitchers recently sold at auction for more than $17,000), and the other is a great 3 gallon beehive jug from Wheeling, West Virginia. I haven’t been able to find comps by this maker, a Richard Nolan. Both are very reasonably priced to sell. We’ll also examine about 12 other pieces of stoneware pottery currently for sale in the Mall, and discuss value on them as well.
