I’ll be interviewing Vern Playton, a veteran pocket watch collector & dealer, who has put together sets of antique pocket watches designed for collectors just starting out in this category. Vern has selected 4 pocket watches from 4 different American maunufacturers for each set–all the sets are priced at a total of $440. During the show Vern will describe each watch, and we’ll discuss the great value that each set represents. It’s an inexpensive way for people to get involved in this interesting & rewarding line of collectibles. It doesn’t seem possible, but almost 5 years have passed since I had Vern on my show to discuss pocket watches. If you missed that program, it’s in the Videos section.

An impressive brass inlaid goncalo alves musical boardroom clock with triple fusee movement, late 19th century in date.

The gilded brass arched dial with decorative floral and foliate engraving. It has a 7 3/8 inch silvered chapter ring and silvered Chime/Silent and Cambridge Chimes/Chime on 8 Bells, subsidiary dials to the arch.

The substantial engine turned three chain fusée movement with anchor escapement and pendulum locking chiming the quarters on eight bells and also chiming the hours on a large gong.

The stunning breakfront case with fluted frieze and ormolu Corinthian columns. The front is intricately inlaid in brass with stylised foliate decoration, spandrels and stars, the sides have gilt brass caryatid and foliate grilles. The case is surmounted with a beautiful rounded arched cornice with a large central brass pineapple finial and four further flaming finials to the corners.

It keeps really good time and is delightful to look at.

Gonçalo alves is a hardwood (from the Portuguese name, Gonçalo Alves). It is sometimes referred to as tigerwood — a name that underscore the wood’s often dramatic, contrasting color scheme, that some compare to rosewood.

While the sapwood is very light in color, the heartwood is a sombre brown, with dark streaks that give it a unique look. The wood’s color deepens with exposure and age and even the plainer-looking wood has a natural luster.

Two species are usually listed as sources for gonçalo alves: Astronium fraxinifolium and Astronium graveolens, although other species in the genus may yield similar wood; the amount of striping that is present may vary.

In the high tropical forests of Central and South America, well-drained soils furnish nutrients for a variety of dense, durable hardwoods sought for maritime use, heavyconstruction, and furniture. The Spanish began harvesting in Latin American forests in the early 1500s to provide timber for boatbuilding and repair. By the early 1900s, however, steel ships had replaced wooden ones, and the interest in tropical forests by both Europeans and Americans shifted to appearance-grade woods for furniture.

Although history fails to provide us with a shopping list of species from either harvest period, it’s probable that the wood we know today as goncalo alves has always been sought. That’s because goncalo alves, considered one of the most beautiful of tropical woods, has a tough reputation, too. Strong and durable, it’s used for construction in its homeland and secondarily for fine furniture. Woodworkers elsewhere treasure the wood for decorative items and veneer accents.

Ormolu – (from French ‘or moulu’, signifying ground or pounded gold) is an 18th-century English term for applying finely ground, high-carat gold in a mercury amalgam to an object of bronze. The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold-coloured veneer known as ‘gilt bronze’.

The manufacture of true ormolu employs a process known as mercury-gilding or fire-gilding, in which a solution of nitrate of mercury is applied to a piece of copper, brass, or bronze, followed by the application of an amalgam of gold and mercury. The item was then exposed to extreme heat until the mercury burned off and the gold remained, adhered to the metal object.

No true ormolu was produced in France after around 1830 because legislation had outlawed the use of mercury. Therefore, other techniques were used instead but nothing surpasses the original mercury-firing ormolu method for sheer beauty and richness of colour. Electroplating is the most common modern technique. Ormolu techniques are essentially the same as those used on silver, to produce silver-gilt (also known as vermeil).

The Westminster Quarters is the most common name for a melody used by a set of clock bells to chime on each quarter hour. The number of chime sets matches the number of quarter hours that have passed. It is also known as the Westminster Chimes, or the Cambridge Chimes from its place of origin, the church of St Mary the Great, Cambridge.

Kingwood
is a classic furniture wood, almost exclusively used for inlays on very fine furniture. Occasionally it is used in the solid for small items and turned work, including parts of billiard cues, e.g., those made by John Parris. It is brownish-purple with many fine darker stripes and occasional irregular swirls. Occasionally it contains pale streaks of a similar colour to sapwood.

The wood is very dense and hard and can be brought to a spectacular finish. it turns well but due to its density and hardness can be difficult to work with hand tools. It also has a tendency to blunt the tools due to its abrasive properties.

Organizations Annual Fly-In Makes Golden Age Come Alive for Enthusiasts

Founded in August of 1953 by Robert L. Taylor, the Antique Aircraft Association is the worlds oldest organization specifically devoted to antique and classic aircraft. Committed to keep the antiques flying, the AAA has dedicated its fifty-six years to the preservation of this Golden Age of Aviation. AAA members have access to the organizations vast historical library, as well as its large assortment of spare engine and aircraft parts available to assist in restoration projects.

With twenty active chapters across the U.S., the AAA works closely with many type clubs including the Interstate, Culver, Corben, Fairchild, Great Lakes, Pietenpol, Rearwin, Parakeet, Hataz, and Travel Air clubs. The organizations headquarters, located near Blakesburg, Iowa, at Antique Field, serves as a site for numerous type club fly-ins throughout the season. Antique Field is also the home to the Airpower Museum, Incorporated (APM). Featuring a large collection of aircraft, the facility has over 20,000 square feet of display and storage space.

Every year over Labor Day Weekend, the Antique Aircraft Association holds its annual AAA/APM Fly-In and Convention. This year, the event celebrated the early days of corporate aviation, themed as Corporate Wings. In all, over 360 aircraft, including an impressive turnout of Howard aircraft, visited Antique Field during the fly-in. Aero-TV spoke with Brent Taylor, son of Robert Taylor, about the event, the organizations history, as well as the familys continued passion for the aircraft of yesteryear.

How to distress and authentically handscrape a hardwood floor – make new wood look old

How to distress and authentically handscrape a hardwood floor - make new wood look old

Views:225351|Rating:4.80|View Time:14:49Minutes|Likes:1451|Dislikes:62
Distressing and hand scraping new wood so that the wood looks antique is quite straight forward. Nothing beats a subtly hand scraped hardwood floor or furniture for artistic effect: sorry, machine scraped floors lake the randomness of a legit handscrape and the powers that be in the factories always seem to overdue the effect. Less is always more.
If you have access to labour or have endless muscles and energy here is what to do:

Supplies:
1. various paint scrapers
2. a fine flat file
3. lots of replacement blades
4. steel wool
5. Vinegar
6. 80 grit sand paper
7. Vaccum with soft bristle head designed for hardwood floors
8. black shoe polish or asphalt (mix into either hardwax oil and/or wax
8. Shellac
9. paint brush
10. hardwax oil (I have used Woca, Eukula, Osmowax, rubio monocoat
11. cotton rags
12. Paste, or liquid wood wax
13. circular buffing machine
14. 16 inch steel wool pad for buffing machines

What to do (assuming you are working with freshly laid 3/4 inch hardwood flooring)

1. Rent a drum sander and edger to flatten off the over wood so that you are working with a flat surface (or if you installed engineered raw wood it will start out flat enough)
2. Distress your floor as randomly as possible by beating it with hammers, heavy chains, bowling balls. What you are doing is creating a depression in the wood grain that will come out later.
3. in a large bucket, fill a large bucket with a measured and recorded amount of regular vinegar
4. put a measured and recorded amount of regular steel wool pads into the vinegar.
5. Let dissolve for a measured and recorded amount of time. White oak has a relatively high amount of tannic acid that reacts quickly with the solution; however, other woods like butternut require a higher concentration of steel wool:vinegar that has been dissolved overnight to get the same reaction.
6. evenly wipe the solution on to the distressed hardwood floor. Wait until it turns black. This will take a varying amount of time depending on the wood species.
7. Get to work and start scraping of the black/brown/purple parts layer on the wood. No matter how hard you try, you will not be able to make the floor perfectly flat: this is what you want! Once the floor is oiled and waxed, light will bounce off the undulations in way that will set this floor apart from any factory scraped floor. Trust me.
8. If you hand scraped across the grain, it will show different than scraping with the grain. I prefer to keep this to a minimum since it tends to look very contrived.
9. If you are using multiple people, make sure they scrape one line them move to any section of the floor. This is because everyone scrapes different and you want everything to look random.
10. sweep up all the wood shaving
11. hand sand each board, going with the grain, until smooth and uniform.
12 vacuum the whole floor
13. If you wish to use shellac, mix up the shellac (sample the different colours – usually clear, orange, or amber) and evenly apply in sections using a paint brush. I recommend taping off small sections along the grain so that you don’t have to worry about. Once complete and dry, hand sand the raised grain with a fine sanding sponge . Repeat the application of shellac and hand sand again after it is dry.
14. Shellac is not appropriate as a finish coat, so make the protective layer with either a hardwax oil, or a liquid or paste wax.
15. You can add shoe polish, oil stain, or asphalt into the hardwax oil or various waxes to give a desired effect.
16. When using hardwax oils, evenly apply with cotton rags(please handle safely, they absolutely will set on fire if you leave balled up and unattended!!!!!!), then evenly polish the floor with a white pad on a circular buffing machine to ensure it is finished evenly. Only add one or two layers of oil and let it cure for about a week before cleaning.
17. If you are using wax, apply by hand and allow the wax to dry for an hour or two. Then buff the floor with a steel wool pad or a whitepad (please see other videos for this). Come back the next day and buff with fine steel wool pad on a buffing machine to help harden the wax. Keep repeating the wax application process as many times as you wish until you get a look that you love. Let the floor cure for about a week. If you do decide to wax the floor, i think this looks the best, make sure you are prepared to purchase a the buffing machine so that you can regularly polish the floor and reapply layers of wax over the years. This is the best way to maintain your floor and have its looks improve with age.
