Antique Paul Storr Sterling Silver Soup Tureen and stand

Antique Paul Storr Sterling Silver Soup Tureen and stand

This is a wonderful English antique George III sterling silver soup tureen cover and stand by the world famous and celebrated silversmith Paul Storr.

It has hallmarks for London 1794, the makers mark of Paul Storr on each part and it bears a stunning coat of arms over a coronet which I have had researched:

The Crest of De Los Rios y Cordoba

The crest as engraved upon this George III English Sterling Silver Soup Tureen, Cover and Stand by Paul Storr hallmarked London 1794 [with a pre-1829 French control stamp] is that of the family of De Los Rios y Cordoba.

It may be blazoned as follows:

Crest:

Issuant from the Coronet of a Captain General or a dragon with its wings displayed vert langued gules the whole ensigned with a representation of the Imperial Crown of Spain or

Motto:

Fluminum familia cotorum ex sanguine Regum [loosely translated along the lines of ‘The family of De Los Rios1 descends from the Blood Royal’].
1 ‘De Los Rios’ ‘of the river’ (fluminum in Latin).

Undoubtedly this soup tureen, cover and stand at one time either formed part of a much larger suite of silver that was in the possession of a member of the De Los Rios y Cordoba family and given the use of the coronet of a Captain General, the only candidate must be Don Joseph De Los Rios y Cordoba who was appointed the Captain General of the Galleys of the Kingdom of Spain. The office of Captain General of the Galleys would be the Spanish equivalent of a British admiral. The full heraldic achievement of Don Joseph is found on the document ( see photographs ) depicting his crest with his arms resting on a double anchor which was the insignia of office of a Captain General of the Galleys.

The Armorial Bearings of Don Joseph De Los Rios y Cordoba, Captain General of the Galleys of the Kingdom of Spain (as taken from ‘Ciencia Heroyca, Reducida A Las Leyes Heráldicas Del Blazon – Tome (Volume) 2 by the Marques De Avilés which was published in Madrid in 1780.

It is of striking oval form with a decorative reeded rim, a demi-lobed body and elegant reeded handles. The incurved dome cover has a stunning ornate leaf and berry finial and is engraved with crest and motto. The oval stand is of similar form with beautiful shell embellished scrolling ends. The whole is decorated with embossed fluted decoration and it also bears a pre-1829 French control mark.

It weighs 4485.5gr

Condition:

In excellent condition with clear hallmarks and no dings, dents or signs of repair. Please see photos for confirmation.

Dimensions in cm:

Height 32 x Width 51.3 x Depth 31 & Weight 144.4 troy oz

Dimensions in inches:

Height 1 foot, 1 inch x Width 1 foot, 8 inches x Depth 1 foot, 0 inches & Weight 4.49 kg

Paul Storr –
born in London England in 1771, was to become one of the most talented silversmiths of the nineteenth century. Today his legacy of exceptionally well crafted silver, found worldwide in museums and private collections, leaves one in awe when compared to that of his contemporaries. After having served a seven year apprenticeship from the age of 14, he began his career in 1792 when he went into a brief partnership with William Frisbee. This did not last and in 1793 a new mark, (his initials ‘P S’) was entered. By the beginning of the nineteenth century he had established himself as one of London’s top silversmiths producing, amongst others, commissions for Royalty.

In 1801 he married Elizabeth Susanna Beyer with whom he was to have ten children. In 1807 Paul Storr entered into a working relationship with Philip Rundell and by 1811 was a partner, and managing the workshops for Rundell, Bridge & Rundell.

During this period he kept his own marks and separate workshop. However it was through Rundell, Bridge & Rundell who were appointed Goldsmith in Ordinary to George III in 1804 that his reputation as a master silversmith grew. His talents lay in being able to transform ideas and designs from Rundell, Bridge & Rundell’s designers, William Theed II, the chief modeller and head of the design department, and later John Flaxman II who succeeded him in 1817. During this period Rundell, Bridge & Rundell’s reputation grew due to the patronage of the Prince Regent (later George IV).

About Me:

I’m a father of two lovely boys and am living and working as a painter in Perth, WA. Ever since I can remember I have drawn and painted and told people when I grow up I want to be an artist. It started when I was three years old and scribbled throughout Mums, not quite out of reach, phone-pad. Reinforced itself when I completed my BA – Fine Art Painting from the Victorian College of the Arts and continues to this day. I mainly work with oil paint on canvas applied with palette knives and brushes. My second favourite combination of mediums being watercolours and ink on heavy paper. The main themes that I love to paint and explore in my work is Beachscapes, Cityscapes, Cafe scenes and Boat Marinas. This is mainly completed using an Impressionistic approach to appearance, I also experiment in a geometric heavy style borrowing from cubism. People play an important part in my work and are as important as the landscape they find themselves in, this allows me to create narrative and direction for the flow through the image. In 2006 I began working full time as an Artist. Every time I paint I try to better understand why I do what I do and choose the things that I paint, and endeavour to connect to my ideas in a stronger way. I’ve strived to improve my technique every day over the years and continue to, as I have a long way to go.
